I had the pleasure of having Paolo Sebastian create my gown for the Brownlow AFL red carpet special this year in Melbourne. I have been working as a host of the telecast with Channel 7 for a few years and really enjoy catching up with the players and their partners to celebrate the end of season. I absolutely loved working with Paul on this incredible gown and together with my stylist Dale Mckie, I got to wear something quite special!

Paul described his creation as ‘an illusion neckline black French lace gown with silk crepe fishtail skirt, with a split.’ The process from concept to construction took around a month. Initially I had a Skype meeting with Paul where Misha (my husband) measured me with tape following Paul’s instructions. Paul said this is done quite often as a lot of the people he designs for are from out of town. It’s very precise, my gown fit like a glove! After finalising a sketch, work commenced.

The hand sewing process involved small pieces of lace (about the size of the palm of a hand) being carefully cut from a larger piece of lace. Paul gently placed these cutouts on the tulle bodice and pinned in the exact way that he would like them to be sewn. A team of fabulous hand sewers then made tiny, precise stitches to sew the lace fragments onto the tulle base. Note, this is not for the impatient. Hours were spent sewing.

On the final day of sewing, four hand sewers worked together at once on the bodice and skirt to finish in time for the event. So grateful to Paul, his amazing team and Dale!
