Get your summer body in winter

Let’s face it, when it feels like a blizzard outside all we want to do is curl into the fetal position with our husband’s baggy clothes on and make a nest on the couch. Maybe with a glass of red. But before we know it the birds will be singing baby and spring will be here. #excited. They say the best bodies are made in winter and I tend to agree. NOW is the time to get your body moving so when it comes time to peel off the layers, you won’t feel so bad.

My tips for staying in shape during winter:

Set your GOALS
If you don’t have anything to aim for you’re going to find it hard to get motivated. Think about what you want to accomplish and write down a list of goals for:
⇒1 week
⇒1 month
⇒In 6 months
⇒In a year
The more specific you can be the better. For example, by next week I want to be able to increase my push up reps by 5, each set. So instead of 3 x 15 push ups, I want to do 3 x 20 push ups. Your goals can be as diverse as you like but remember to keep them realistic and achievable.
Images are a great way to remind yourself of your goals. Find a picture that you aspire to that you can put up in the house. It might be a shot taken a few years ago in your favourite dress that you want to get back into. I put all of my images and affirmations on the fridge door so I can see it before swinging open the door!

Focus is key
Fitness is not just about looking good, but feeling good. While it’s important to be focused on your physical goals, grab a pen and write a list of all the benefits exercise brings you. Some things could include:
⇒Reduce stress
⇒Improve my sleep
⇒Better relationships
⇒Become a more confident person
⇒Happier person!!
Look at this list often. It makes it easier to lace up the running shoes, trust me.

Find new moves
The chilly season may be the perfect time to find something completely new to challenge your body. Taking on something new and interesting may take the focus off the fact it’s freezing out there! Sign up to a local yoga studio, commit to an indoor boot camp with friends once a week, take dance classes or try your hands (and feet) at skipping!  My tips for learning how to skip are here. I highly recommend planning something with at least one other friend. Once you commit to a workout with someone you’re more likely to make that session so you don’t let them down.

Be prepared
We all know being prepared for anything generally makes life easier but in winter it’s key for staying fit. If you know going to the gym fits best after work, pack your gear the night before so you don’t have to think about it. The worst thing you can do is go home before doing exercise. I know once I’m in the door from a long day I’m not going anywhere except the bath or bed. Find what works best for your schedule and stick to it.
I always like to check the forecast for the days ahead. If I know it’s going to be sunny I’ll plan an afternoon run and make the most of the fresh air.

LOVE yourself
Love yourself up. Big time. When you hit those goals, treat yourself to something nice (no not a jam donut), go get a massage, see a movie with the girls or book a spa treatment. I have a thing for body scrubs at the moment, I find them very relaxing and I go for the type that hydrates my skin. When you make a conscious effort to reward yourself you’ll regain motivation and focus for the next goal and it’ll help you stay on track.
